Lake Forest Shotokan is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), which has been teaching karate in North America since 1955. We practice a traditional form of karate that was the first introduced to Japan in 1922. Our chief instructor is Master Tsutomu Ohshima, the founder of Shotokan Karate in the United States.

Introduction and Instructor Profile
Thank you for choosing our school and facility for martial arts instruction. Lake Forest Shotokan is a training school, or dojo, of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima, who was one of Master Gichen Funokoshi’s direct students at Waseda University in Japan, founded SKA. Master Funokoshi was the creator of Shotokan Karate. Mr. Ohshima awarded David Lechuga his black belt in 1983 (1st degree). Mr. Ohshima awarded Mr. David Lechuga his Godan or 5th degree black belt in 2006. Mr. David Lechuga has been training in Shotokan since 1978. Prior to starting Lake Forest Shotokan Karate, Mr. Lechuga was an instructor at Garden Grove Shotokan Karate (since 1983). Aside from Mr. Ohshima, Mr. Lechuga’s first instructors were Mr. Don DePree, Godan, and Mr. Greg Scott, Godan.
